Project Overview

AtsanLacin, SKE's long-term partner in Turkey, has completed the installation of SK-WY ultrasonic non-invasive level gauges across approximately 25 horizontal LPG storage tanks. The project is the seventh collaboration between SKE and AtsanLacin over a three-year partnership.

Challenge

LPG storage tanks are pressurized vessels holding a flammable, volatile product, which creates several specific obstacles for level instrumentation:

  • Hot work and entry risk. Installing traditional intrusive level instruments requires drilling or welding into the tank shell, which means depressurizing and emptying the tank first and opening a hot-work permit. Across 25 tanks, this adds up to significant downtime and safety exposure.

  • Long-term leak risk. Intrusive instruments (floats, displacers, probes) each introduce a seal through the pressure boundary that must be maintained and inspected for the life of the tank — a permanent risk point for an LPG operator.

  • Sensing reliability. LPG's properties, along with vapor space and condensation on the tank wall, can degrade the accuracy of some non-contact sensing methods.

  • Hazardous-area requirements. LPG tank farms are classified hazardous areas, so any installed equipment must carry the appropriate explosion-proof rating.

Solution

AtsanLacin installed SKE's SK-WY non-invasive level gauges externally on each of the 25 tanks. The gauge mounts directly onto the tank shell using a bracket and clamp-on sensing pads, with no drilling, welding, or flange connection required. Cabling is routed in protective conduit along the tank surface to the transmitter, housed in an explosion-proof enclosure suited to the hazardous-area classification of the site. A local display on each unit provides an on-site, real-time level reading in addition to the signal sent to the control system.
Because the gauge requires no tank penetration, every tank remained sealed and in service throughout installation, with no hot-work permitting and no process downtime.

Results

  • 25 tanks instrumented with no tank penetrations, no hot work, and no process interruption

  • Zero new leak paths introduced to the tank fleet

  • Real-time level data, both locally displayed and transmitted to the control system

  • Consistent, repeatable installation across all 25 units, completed by AtsanLacin's team

  • Continued partnership, marking 7 successful projects between SKE and AtsanLacin over 3 years

Acknowledgment

SKE thanks AtsanLacin for their continued partnership and the consistent quality of execution shown across this project and the six before it. We look forward to supporting further non-invasive monitoring projects together across Turkey's LPG sector.
